Checkups & Cleanings
When it comes to preventive care, checkups and cleanings are the gold standard. With a cleaning, we’ll be able to remove all of the harmful plaque and tartar from your teeth that is the root cause of so many dental issues, and with a checkup (also known as an oral exam), we’ll be able to catch any problems you have early so we can treat them quickly.
Periodontal disease is an infection that damages the gums, roots of the teeth, and the bone that supports them. You probably know it as gum disease. How can we combat this problem? With high-quality periodontal therapy, of course! Should we spot any sign of this infection during your regular checkups, we’ll perform a scaling and root planing treatment. With this, we’ll remove the plaque and bacteria that has accumulated along your gum line. Plus, we’ll gentle reshape the roots of your teeth to lower your chances of reinfection in the future.
Dental sealants allow us to give the most vulnerable teeth a little extra protection from decay and cavities. Typically, we only apply them to the back teeth because their rough surfaces make them quite difficult to completely clean while brushing, especially for small children. We’ll paint a clear, thin layer of a plastic-based substance directly onto the teeth, and this will create an invisible barrier that plaque, bacteria, and food particles cannot cross.
Nightguards for Bruxism
Bruxism is a very common condition where a person unconsciously clenches their jaw and grinds their teeth while they sleep. As many as one in three people suffer from it, and left untreated, it can wear down the teeth to the point that they actually break and fall out! If we suspect that you are experiencing bruxism, we will recommend that you wear a nightguard to bed. This is a custom-made mouthpiece that will place a firm but comfortable barrier between your teeth in order to prevent them from grinding together.
Oral Cancer Screenings
This year alone, nearly 50,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer, and sadly, many will not survive the next five because the disease was caught too late. Oral cancer is very treatable when detected early, which is why our doctors recommend that everyone should undergo at least one oral cancer screening per year. This service will be a part of your regular checkups. It only takes a couple of minutes, and should we find anything, we’ll let you know exactly what to do next.
You’ll find fluoride in most toothpastes and even public water sources because it provides a safe, natural way to strengthen the teeth against tooth decay and cavities. You’ll find it in our office, too! We can include a topical fluoride treatment as part of your family’s regular checkups to keep everyone’s smiles cavity-free year-round. It’s quick, it’s painless, and it will help you smile brightly between visits!
