What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, affects the gums and underlying jawbone that support the teeth and keep them in place. These structures serve as the foundation of your oral health. If they’re damaged badly enough in the advanced stages of gum disease, teeth can become loose and fall out – even if they’ve never had cavities.
The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which simply means “inflamed gums”. Oftentimes, we can reverse gingivitis with regular cleanings and good oral hygiene habits at home.
However, once gum disease progresses past gingivitis, it can no longer be reversed or cured. But we can treat it to keep it from progressing, which will significantly lower your risk of tooth loss and also keep your body healthier as well.
What Are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?
Gum disease is sometimes called a “silent disease” because it doesn’t cause pain in the early stages. But there are still signs and symptoms to watch for:
- Bleeding gums, especially after brushing or flossing
- Gum recession
- Swollen, red, or tender gums
- A persistent bad taste in the mouth or bad breath
- Loose teeth or discomfort when chewing (often noticed in later stages)
If you notice any of these signs of gum disease in Austin, schedule an appointment right away. Treatment will make a big difference, but the earlier we diagnose this condition, the more successful we can be.
How Is Gum Disease Treated?
The first step is having your gums regularly evaluated so we can catch any problems early on. At Parkfield Family Dental, we include an annual gum exam with your checkups so that, when necessary, we can recommend periodontal therapy.
This type of therapy is called scaling and root planing, which is sometimes referred to as a “deep cleaning,” and is often completed in 2-4 appointments. Your comfort is always a top priority, so we’ll start by numbing the area before using special instruments to thoroughly but gently remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria under your gumline.
Then, depending on the severity of your gum disease, we’ll recommend professional maintenance cleanings every 3, 4, or 6 months to keep your gums healthy moving forward.
As a dentist in Austin, we’ve used periodontal therapy to help many of our patients stabilize their gums, reduce their general health risks, and prevent tooth loss.
